taught so much about our way of life, our
civilisation, our people, our falls and our gains.    Strangely, it had been exactly eighteen years since the last Shaman, Therana, had died. Not many people seemed to be interested in this fact but I strangely drew something parallel to this. Whenever I voiced their opinion, it was always pushed aside as if I was crazy. I learnt to accept it.
   I had been born after Therana had died and since I was a young girl, I had been told many stories about her greatness: how she had led us into our last battle and sadly, how she had died indirectly because of it.
   Over the hills, a few miles away, lay the gigantic ruined camp and settlement of the Matak tribe, once our allies many years previously. However, moods and ideas had changed since then and our friendship had slowly disappeared, like sand falling through open hands. There was nothing left to salvage and nobody wanted to try and regain it. The cost we knew would be greater than what we would receive in return.

The friendship was lost and a period of suspicion and great tension began.
   That was how the first battle began.
   According to many sources, a report had come in from spies that the Matak were brewing an army to not only conquer us but to enforce their rule upon us. Immediately, our settlement swung into action, churning our warriors and other infantry by the dozen each day. Not before long, the time had come and our army of thousands and thousands had marched upon the hill overlooking their camp. The battle went ahead and though many died as we took on the Matak, we won the battle in the end.
   The sheer exhaustion of using many spells and charms had caused the Shaman to age considerably. On the eve of battle, she looked as if she was in her mid forties - the next morning, after the battle, she looked as if she had reached her one hundredth birthday. Overuse of the magic and spells had ended up killing her even though she had kept us all safe from the horrors that the Matak tribe had intended to
