For new players, and although I am not an experienced player (Mashy), I invite all new players to discuss tactics within games, out of Populous games, generally improve your skill at Populous, and have a good time!

I would try to encourage the use of maps other than the highly popular "Face Off" as it is a complex map, and new players would have to have some freindly "training" games in order to learn the new skills and tactics that single player lacks to provide.
